Surrounded by family, Charles Gessel, 74, of Montgomery, NY passed away August 1, 2024 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh, NY. The son of William and Arline Gessel, he was born on September 6, 1949 in Nyack, NY and grew up in New City. After graduating from Clarkston High School in 1969, Charles joined the Army, serving in Vietnam from 1970-1971. Upon returning home, he was employed by the New York State Thruway Authority working as a mechanic completing the moveable barrier on The Tappan Zee Bridge and later working on projects throughout Dutchess County until he retired in 2010. Charles was preceded in death by his parents as well as his sister, Ruth Callahan. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Karen, his two sons and their families; Keith (Melissa) and Michael (Kristen) as well as his three grandchildren; Danielle, Justin and Michael Jr., and two siblings; Barbara and Roger. The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to Dr. Richard Diamond and his staff members for their care and support of Charles throughout the past several decades of his life.
