Todd Westerfield (Hawley, PA) posted a condolence
Wednesday, November 3, 2010
On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone who stopped by the services, sent a card, left a message or just thought of us these past few weeks. When your last name is "Westerfield", you can't get very far in Orange or Sullivan without somebody asking if you're related to him. I find it easier to carry a folding chair with me; the stories of how he touched their lives can last a while. His youngest grandchildren, Jesse and Chance, have been falling asleep next to the answering machine at home while they replay a birthday greeting message he left for us last February when the big snow storm shut Pine Bush down for a couple days. The love in his voice is calming and eases their pain. Pop was a humble man and surely would have been slightly embarrassed by all the attention. I know his influence will continue to affect lives, hearts and career choices, and I know we'll never see another like him. Maybe it's better that way; his mark on all our lives will stand apart from others and keep his memory fresh in our minds.
Again, we thank you all for sharing your time and memories with us. "Though the singer is silent, there still is the truth of the song."

Mr. Westerfield was one of the most influential people in my life. I had him seven years ago, when I was in fourth grade. He always had a smile on his face and I don't believe I have ever met anyone with such a love for everyone they meet and for teaching those around them. There are so many people in this world that could learn so much from him just from being in his prescence for just a few moments. He was an amazing man.
It was there in his class, that I fell in love with history. His love for the subject was contagious and joyous. Because of him, I continued to love the subject. I will be graduating next year, and I plan to go to college for elementary education with a focus on social studies. This all began in his classroom. I can only hope to be a teacher as wonderful and magnificent as he was. He holds a special place in my heart and in the hearts of everyone that was fortunate enough to be touched by him. Rest in eternal peace, Mr. Westerfield. Thank you for everything.

Mr. Westerfield was a great teacher. Best I ever had. I just can't imagine that he would be gone only 4 years after I had him as a teacher. He was loved by everyone, and I mean that. He was one of the teachers that really believed in me. He knew I had the potential, even though I didn't show it. I will be at his wake on Tuesday and pay my respects. R.I.P. Mr. Westerfield.

I wanted to send a note of sympathy to the entire Westerfield family. Both my children were fortunate enough to have Wally as their teacher. My son, Thomas remained in Mr. Westerfield's classroom for three consecutive years. A small group of twelve students, whom he taught for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade, became known as the Dirty Dozen! They traveled to Gettysburg together. Thomas kept in contact with him and they corresponded while he was in college and then in law school. Ten years later, our daughter Elizabeth was lucky enough to be in Mr. Westerfield's classroom. How she loved going to school everyday to see him. He would tell her stories about how he rocked her in his arms when she was a baby. They went to Gettysburg as well. Last Sunday, she made sure she stopped at his house on Halloween. We are so very sorry for your loss. Our entire community mourns with your family. We will keep you in our prayers. Ruthanne Akacki
