Oh Kevin dear - so many memories of you. As a beautiful baby, a newborn, you loved bathing. You splashed and splashed, grinned and babbled with delight. When you first visited Kailua Beach in Hawaii as a wee toddler, you walked right to the water’s edge, excited and fearless. Other beachgoers smiled and one woman said, “Look at that cute baby; he wants to swim.” And swim you did, your white blonde hair matching the color of the beach sand. During your last Hawaii visit, you were at the beach nearly every day. On one occasion, you passed a police officer who was chatting to the lifeguard up on his stand. As you passed by, the officer exclaimed, “Holy (expletive), look at the size of that guy!” You smiled and kept walking. Most people in Hawaii are rather short so seeing your exquisite 6’8” frame and handsome face was astonishing. While exploring under water, you suggested with pointed finger, a stranger to swim to Flat Island off the coast. Eight foot sharks have been known to lurk in surrounding waters, yet you swam there and back, strong and capable, enjoying the physical challenge.
As your Grandfather Edward predicted, you grew to be a tall man. He was absolutely crazy about, infatuated with and captivated by you. It was such a pleasure to see you both walking, your four year old hand enveloped by his, happily sharing time together.
Some might think such a tall man would be gruff, but there was always a gentleness about you. When I could no longer care for my mother, she wept and leaving her room, tears streaming down your face, you said, “When Grandma cries, I cry.” Your hugs of greeting were warm and enveloping, never an opportunity to demonstrate strength. As others would probably agree, I always felt calm and peaceful in your company. I recall a baseball game where, as a little boy, you played outfield. Eventually bored with the event, you sat down exploring the grass, finally stretching out to enjoy the warm sun. You took my hand as we were leaving and said, “Auntie Trisha, let’s lay down and watch the clouds go by.” How could anyone resist such a sweet, sweet child?
One summer you and your sister participated in the Summer Fun Day Camp, both of you acculturating to the island. One day you proudly exclaimed that you traded your Oreos with another boy for nori (a dried seaweed) at lunch. Your palate remained adventuresome and as an adult, you relished the plate lunches and cuisine of Hawaii. Nothing of course
could take the place of shave ice, Hawaii’s unique take on the snow cone. You boarded the plane to return to New York one year with shave ice syrup stains down the front of your tee shirt because we stopped for your special treat on the way to the airport. During your visit a few years ago, you stopped every day at Island Snow, Kailua’s shave ice spot on the way to the beach. On the last day of your visit, you received a gigantic snow cone with all the syrups of your choice - for free!
Oh Kevvie, I am so heartbroken that our time together has ended so soon. Nothing can compare to the pain of your parents, sister other family members. I feel privileged, however, to have known you and shared time with you for thirty-four years. I’ve been so honored to be your aunt and I am happy that you knew love with Natasha. Kev, I will love you, think of you and miss you all the days of my life. May the universe bless you as you have blessed us.
